Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Michelle A — 04 Oct 2013
Firstly wow. Saw this film for the first time about a week ago and it's still on my mind. Don't we all say at some point in our life that we want to disappear from society, well Chris actually does just that with only the clothes on his back and no dollar after donating all his uni money to the hungry.
We see him on a 2 year spiritual journey of self-discovery meeting some wonderful people along the way. That old man really got to me, managed to hold it together up until he mentioned adopting him then I crumbled.
I understand why people may think what he did was stupid and arrogant thinking he could survive with so little but what's wrong with believing you can do something, trying and failing miserably, I know in his case it had tragic consequences which is awful.
There was just no stopping him, he was determined to get to Alaska and live in solitude no matter how many people tried to put him off and have him stay with them. It's truly inspiring. I for one am a wimp and need to be dragged out of my comfort zone kicking and screaming.
It frustrated me a little that he never got in contact with his sister who he seemed so close to in the beginning. Brilliant casting and soundtrack, and gorgeous scenery. Has become one of my all-time favourites.
I'll have to read the book at some point. RIP Christopher McCandless.
