A vast and realistic epic of the soul. Penn reveals his talent for direction with exhilarating scenes followed by heart wrenching drama. Hirsch emerged from his cocoon of commercial mediocrity with his empathetic portrayal of an idealist who throws his will to the wind a la Henry David Thoreau.
