Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Brian R — 03 Jan 2013
This was a very long and boring movie. I'll admit I slept through the process and had to rewind what I missed. I didn't miss that much. The story is about a young man named Chris McCandless who dreams about going into the Alaskan country to live and survive in the wild since after all he rejects the American dream of making money and getting a high paying profession.
On the way he meets people and in a way I saw Chris McCandless as a selfish loner who listens but doesn't take any advice. The best scenes in the movie imo is when he meets Franz played wonderfully by Hal Holbrook who has a close relationship with him and tells McCandless his life story about the lost of his family. There is a great scenes where the two men climb atop a hilside then taking a moment talking about the depths of God.
Sean Penn is a great actor and here he steps in as a filmmaker telling this story with real seriousness. The problem for me was I couldn't really connect with the main character McCandless played by Emile Hirsch (another great actor) but I admire Penn's efforts somewhat, particularly telling this story in a non linear style.
