Review of Into the Wild (2007) by The Critic ( — 21 Aug 2013
Beautifully photographed by Eric Gautier, Sean Penn's nonlinear telling of Christopher McCandless' rebellion against materialism might be a little too long for it's own purpose (148 minutes), though there's no denying the engrossing screen presence of Emile Hirsch as our engaging middle class protagonist. McCandless' much-debated death is not factually presented here (rather based on the original hypothesis featured in Jon Krakauer's 1996 book), but is a dramatic, confronting and affecting exercise in filmmaking and acting.
Strong supporting performances from Hal Holbrook and Jena Malone, amongst others, add to the overall impact of the piece. Very competently made and quite touching.
