I'm completely in love with Emile Hirsch and his subtle approach in playing Christopher McCandless. Hirsch is so good as the doomed adventurer that one begins to forget that is is a film, not a documentary, that is playing out on the screen.

Hirsch is so multi-faceted in his abandonment that it's difficult to think he wasn't acknowledged by the AAMPS for his efforts. And in a small but integral role, Hal Holbrook stuns as Ron, a man willing to give McCandless the structure he needs but does not desire.

Sean Penn's direction is flawless, and hearing Eddie Vedder's grown on the soundtrack helps to show that, given the right circumstances, movies still mean something.
