Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Jane B — 09 Mar 2013
Oh my god ... I don't know what I did expect from this movie (yeah, maybe some guy alone in the wilderness), but this went straight into my favourite movies of all time. The beautiful cinematography, the themes (escapism, adventure, society criticism, human encounters, nature), the vast spectre of American landscapes pictured, the fantastic soundtrack by Pearl Jam's front man Eddie Vedder and of course, the actors - all this hit right home. Watching this makes one questioning one's own life (like protagonist Chris does with Ron).
Mister Sean Penn, thank you so much for this gem of a movie!
As it is the story of Christopher McCandless leaving everything (family, education, security) behind and the plot really focussing on him and his inner and outer journey, the power of it remains very much on the shoulders of its protagonist and the actor portraying him - and Emile Hirsch (whom I first noticed in The Emperor's club) delivers an astonishing performance! It is not only his outward change which is breathtaking, but that guy manages to capture the audience' attention in every one of his scenes. All the other characters are only little stops on Chris' journey, but there are fine performances by wll-known actors like VInce Vaughn, Kristen Stewart, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt and Zach Galifianakis.
