As if being in the eye of the storm of the century is not enough, personal dramas are forced out of almost every single character.
At certain point film turns into a center stage for a cheap cliche confessionary from a fear that plot may collapse into itself.
Hey! It's a movie about tornados! There is your damn main character! So don't you see you don't need 8 other subplots to keep the story going?
However, the special effects are brilliant so a star for that :).
