Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Jin Z — 25 Apr 2012
This is a grim documentary. Forgive me if I'm beside the point here, but it seems that violent deaths are part of everybody's daily life in Texas. A guy, whose brother was one of the victims in the triple murders tells us that his sister was killed by a car when she was crossing the highway.
But he would be considered quite fortunate compared to the daughter and sister/aunt of two of the three victims (her parents adopted the baby of her sister's and she calls the boy her "brother" but actually he's her nephew).
As if the murders of her mother and brother/nephew were not tragic enough, she later revealed that her father and his brother were hit and killed by a train 6 months before her wedding. As you thought that things couldn't get worse, she told us that her "real dad" hung himself, an uncle not sure of hers killed himself because he had cancer, and a cousin or something died of drug overdose.
When all these deaths came out in one sentence, it's hard for me not to form a scary picture of the state.
