Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Niki G — 17 Oct 2012
I am usually annoyed by Herzog's voice-over docs as he so often inserts himself into the narrative. In Into the Abyss, however, he simply steps back and asks thoughtful questions. Two men are at the center of the film: both proven guilty, one sentenced to life and one to death. Herzog is even handed and also shows the grizzly crime scenes and the victim's families.
It's a thought-provoking meditation on capital punishment.
