Review of Into Great Silence (2005) by Dave B — 09 Mar 2008
"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalms 46:10, KJV). I do not remember seeing that verse quoted at all in this film, but that is certainly the underlying theme. (Other verses are quoted.) This presentation of life in a contemporary monastery is incredibly well done.
I can see why some would find it hard to sit through the whole thing, for the very discipline of leaving noise, distractions, busyness, the rush of the world behind, is a challenging one. After reading other reviews of the movie, I was admittedly predisposed to liking it.
But still, it was a wonderful exercise in being still and allowing the beauty of nature and the calming routine of these godly monks speak volumes, even when there is little actual conversation. Those seeking respite from this world's turmoil and a visual illustration of a disciplined spiritual life lived out will find much benefit in this fine work! I have read that this movie was a great hit in Europe.
That is encouraging news, and gives me hope that more Europeans will find themselves drawn to the God Whose Words were the foundation of so much of European culture. Americans could also find great benefit in it.
