Review of Intimacy (2001) by Ed Q — 10 Nov 2009
Mark Rylance and Kerry Fox give incredibly raw performances in the physically and emotionally graphic "Intimacy." The film documents the way in which emotional alienation forces humans to seek physical affection, which in turn leads to heartbreak and further alienation.
The animal nature of sexuality is fully explored, as Rylance and Fox engage in aggressive sex as a way to ignore their feelings of emptiness. When Rylance decides he needs some form of emotional commitment, it complicates matters, and the line between physical and emotional intimacy becomes all too clear.
