Review of Interstellar (2014) by Ann S — 18 Jun 2017
The viewership "issue" with a film of this extraordinary complexity is that there is little comprehension of what's going on or what it all means without being explicitly told or enduring listless considerations across multiple screenings.
And where Tarkovsky and Kubrick would strongly stand against explanation, mandating the latter -- discussion and discovery their prime ambition for audiences -- the Nolan brothers (or perhaps Legendary Pictures, or perhaps both) offer the former, the less-challenging intellectual experience, whose heavy-handed exposition incidentally creates a less-enjoyable overall experience (and represents in Interstellar a bad habit exploited even in scenes where none is needed).
One can understand the filmmaker predicament, and one may be disappointed with this specific filmmaker's resolution, as I was, despite being blown away by the filmmaker's creative vision.
