Review of Intermission (2003) by George P — 11 Aug 2009
Dark comedy about losers in Ireland trying to get lucky, gain popularity, deal with love loss and find purpose in life. Great cast featuring Colin Farrell (S.W.A.T., In Bruges), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine), Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day), and Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men).
Murphy plays a character stuck in a crummy grocery store job with a lousy boss, Farrell plays a punk thief who punches women just as often as he would men, and when the two meet up no good can come from it. Macdonald plays Murphy's ex-girl and Henderson plays Macdonald's sister, who has a shady past and as a result has taken on a rather dumpy appearance and thick mustache.
Bit of violence in this flick about small-time thieves, egotistic cops and drunkards, bit of potty humor (Shirley Henderson's character has an extensively wicked backstory), and of course some sexual mishaps along the way but nothing short of an R-rated rom-com Irish-style.
The best part? Farrell's rendition of "I Fought the Law" as the end credits roll.
