Review of Interiors (1978) by Roman P — 26 Oct 2009
The dark side of Woody Allen comes out through this film and it's a side that we don't see too often in his movies, especially his older ones. A thoroughly depressing little film in which everyone is a mess.
It seems the three sisters all love yet envy one another, even though each is just as confused and as disturbed as the next. The mother is a real mental case, but I also feel sorry for her in the way in which her husband leaves and then re-marries, which then causes her to drown herself in the ocean.
It seems there's depression around every corner in this film and as a result, I found myself not really liking any of the characters very much. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was very well acted and was very well cast, I just didn't find myself really being drawn to any one specific character.
They all had so many issues. The sisters, their parents, their partners, none of them truly happy. The whole film leaves you feeling pretty down, but it's nice to see a different side of Woody Allen come out through his films and he proves he can do drama just as well as he can do comedy.
