Review of Insurgent (2015) by Jao R — 18 Aug 2015
The first was better. And that's saying something because the first one was already bad. But how do you remedy an idiocy in the first place, when the entire premise of the story is about how creating factions will create peace? Like really? But somehow, the author thought that was a bright idea.
But let's suspend our logic for the moment and look at the film. Meet Tris, the self-absorbed, navel-gazing, emo Divergent that's narcissistic to an annoying degree. Hey look at me, I have issues so I will cut my hair and act emo around my boyfriend. But that's okay because I'm special.
This a classic Mary Sue. The writer shoehorning her own view of herself into the main character. But suspend that for a moment and look past, and your brain freezes even further from the idiocy that is the plot.
*Spoilers* Tris is a Divergent (someone supposedly having all characteristics of all the factions) and yet for much of the movie, she displays neither Erudite nor Candor qualities. This is the character that looked her friend in the eye and lied to her about not knowing where Will was. She lies so much she even lies to herself! Yeah Candor my ass. Forget about even looking for Erudite qualities. Smart, this girl is not. Bu-bu-but, she passed the Erudite test! Yeah a stupid test that proclaims you smart just because you realize you're in a sim. Give me a break. But hey, at least the film recognized she has difficulty with Amity. But that too was sadly destroyed as the film performed its ultimate deus ex machina.
But its okay, because the world is getting stupider and this film is geared towards YA audiences. Which just magnifies the sad truth about our planet's future. Smart books aren't being appreciated. But dumb books apparently sells. A lot.
