Review of Insurgent (2015) by Sally A — 16 Mar 2016
Insurgent is the second film of the Divergent series, directed by Robert Schwentke, and it stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James in a science fiction action flick about Tris and his crew on the run after the events from the first film, and they are making a plan to go up against the leader Jeanine.
So after watching Divergent, I wasn't excited to see it, but I'm curious to see what the sequel is going to bring, which turns out to be an average film that is a bit of a step down. Shailene Woodley is still the best actor in the movie as she brings a lot into this, while the supporting cast are fine, just holding a bit behind.
There are some things in here that are better than the first film like the action scenes and the special effects, but there are also some moments in here that are worse than it like how it doesn't make sense in some plot points, and the storyline is a bit too similar to not just young adult adaptations, but also Hollywood films in general.
I'm glad that the chemistry between the two leads is still there, but there's really not much to say about them as they aren't an interesting couple. The test scenes are still the best part of the film which I'm happy that there was more of it, and it's bigger like every other sequel.
I was a bit more interested to see where it's going, and with that box that the movie is building up on, the payoff is very disappointing to say at least as it's seriously like The Maze Runner.
Insurgent is an even more generic film that I hope that Allegiant gets better, but since it's a two part film, I don't think it's going to happen.
