Review of Insurgent (2015) by Danny O — 18 Jul 2015
Insurgent is yet another average movie based on a young adult book. The cast is good, there is quite a bit of talent involved. However, many of them such as Kate Winslet's villain have little to do.
Shailene Woodley once again shines as the lead, she does a very good job, being a cool action hero and conveying believable emotion. The action scenes are well filmed and can be exciting, they are well executed.
There are some interesting story elements, particularly the simulation scenes (even though they feel similiar to Inception). The movie's greatest flaw is its story, it feels convoluted and unfocused.
This world is divided into factions, but with all the different ones out heroes travel to, it's hard to keep them straight. There are also too many plot points in the film that don't feel necessary to the bigger picture.
The movie really doesn't give you much of a reason to care about these characters either, other than Tris. It is full of clichés, bad writing, and bad direction. So Insurgent isn't as good as the original, it has better action and a good cast, but it suffers from a poorly executed story and a very basic story that doesn't break free from the genre trends, and is entirely forgettable.
Insurgent gets 2/5 stars (C-).
