Review of Insurgent (2015) by Thelonesoldier — 16 Apr 2015
One of the most insipid, unintelligent films I've ever seen. Insurgent makes no effort to be coherent or consistent, and suffers from terrible pacing.
The first half of the movie is a rapid fire mash of action scenes, so unbelievable and poorly thought-out that I thought they were all part of a simulation. At one point early in the film, Tris and Four start a brawl with some innocent people, killing many of them, and then Four suddenly establishes they are allies and everyone acts like nothing happened. Only a few days after the first film, Jeanine suddenly has a massive army of ninja-warriors that spray submachine guns one-handed while zip lining between skyscrapers. Somehow Jeanine is cranking out fantastic new anti-divergent technology on a daily basis; if they can engineer and mass-produce mind-control darts and handheld divergent scanners in a matter of days, why were any of the events in the first film necessary?
Characters switch allegiance at a whim, often with no explanation, and no one ever questions them.
The core of the plot is a magic box with a special message from the benevolent founders of the city, that kills anyone who tries to open it. What?!
Utter garbage. Stay away.
