Review of Inspector Gadget 2 (2003) by Adrienne S — 17 Sep 2004
I don't always consider myself to be the best critic for Children's movies since I have a very different idea of what is fun to my son. But in this instance, I think that it is important to include both Jeremy's and my views. From a six year old's point of view, Inspector Gaget is the cat's banana. Jeremy could watch the movie over and over again, finding it just as funny the five hundredth time as he did the first. For Jeremy it is the wonderful acting of French Stewart that he finds so fascinating. To a little boy, French is very amusing to watch.
While I will acknowledge that this second enstallment of the Inspector Gadget Movies is a leap forward from the farce that was released in 1999, I still have some....complaints? reservations? French Stewart is a much better Inspector Gadget to Mathew Brodrick by far and I have absolutely no complaints about the silly animation of the dog's acting. I even have no problems with Elaine Hendrix's acting or the idea of a romantic charactor for the Inspector. Where my problems lie are with the acting ability of Caitlin Wachs who plays Penny. I'm not sure if it was the writing, or the type of character that she played, or if it was just that she is a really bad actor...but man I just cringed every time she came on to the screen! My other problem was with the writing when it came to Inspector Gadget's Character. Remember that I was the child who has seen every single episode of the cartoon in the eighties. To me Penny didn't seem smart enough to solve the crimes by herself the way that she did in the cartoon. And the inspector didn't seem clueless enough to be believable as the inspector. And one last complaint is the laptop that Penny used to carry around in the cartoon. I mean this was one of the main reasons that I was so into the cartoon in the first place. So I guess in the end, as a general kids movie, this one is definately better than the first. But I still think that they have a long way to go before someone like me will consider it worthy of the cartoon that I as a child used to watch!
