Review of Inspector Gadget (1999) by Mathlover9000 — 03 Feb 2018
When I was much younger, I really loved this movie and watched it over 50 times. Watching this movie again as a 18-year-old adult was an interesting experience. Though I still really like this movie, this movie was nowhere close to as good as I once thought it was.
Instead of grading this movie off of nostalgia, I will provide an honest assessment of this movie. Let's start of with the positives. The hero, John Brown aka Inspector Gadget, and the villain, Dr. Claw, were good in this movie.
Their characters were established in this movie. John Brown was ambitious and wanted to use his powers to help people. He wanted the police force to take him seriously and allow him to work on the case involving Brenda's death.
Dr. Claw is clearly psychotic, intimidating, a guy you do not want to mess with. The plot and the story, though not perfect, was at least coherent and even somewhat good. Most of the humor landed in this movie.
I love the evil RoboGadget and thought he was hilarious. The action scene between Inspector Gadget and RoboGadget was very fun to watch. Unfortunately, this movie suffers some issues. This movie, though had some creativity, was overall generic.
Some of the humor came off as way too goofy and even cringeworthy at times. It was also not explained the greatest how Inspector Gadget survived without the chip. The side villains Kramer and Sikes could have been very interesting characters but did not receive the character development I feel they deserved.
In the end, the good things about this film weren't that good, but the bad things about this film weren't that bad. I would say that the good slightly outweighs the bad. For kids, this film is very fun to watch and would love this film.
However, for adults, this film is just average. For me, it was a decent 6/10.
