Review of Insomnia (2002) by Dane H — 08 Jan 2012
It may not contain the multiple plot twists and mind-bending scenes present in Nolan's other films, but Insomnia is nevertheless a smart and suspenseful crime thriller. The story is very straightforward, but it was a remake of an original film and thus contains little of Nolan's creative plot devices.
It is Nolan's direction that makes the film great; he takes a straightforward story and gradually adds more suspense and thrills in each scene, thus keeping us audience on the edge of our seats. Al Pacino gives a remarkable performance as usual, clearly emphasizing the effects sleep depravity has on a detective.
It was a pleasant surprise to see the comical Robin Williams step out of his comfort zone and emerge as a sinister character. Insomnia is not one of Nolan's best works, but it is entertaining.
