Review of Insomnia (2002) by Jonny B — 06 Oct 2012
Massively popular director Christopher Nolan, who we can all relate to for Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy and Memento shows he remained successful in his earlier years with an intellectual take on a Swedish thriller.
Al Pacino drives this action/thriller drama with an exceptional performance as LA detective Will Dormer; he is also met with a fabulous supporting cast including Hilary Swank (who's character is Ellie Burr), Robin Williams' sinister Walter Finch and Martin Donovan as Hap Eckhart.
Pacino's Will Dormer becomes obsessed in the investigation of the murder of a teenage girl. However, matters take a sinister turn when he pursues a prime suspect before accidentally shooting his fellow officer Hap (Donovan). This leads to him forming an unlikely and dangerous relationship with the teenage girl's killer Walter Finch (Robin Williams). As he is tangled un a web of lies and deceit whilst having tormenting sleeping difficulties, Will begins to lose grips with sanity.
Pacino and Williams are sublime while Swank is also realistic alongside the remainder of the cast.
Insomnia is a generally slow paced thriller which at times feels a little under-paced.
This isn't Nolan's best film but it renders similarities with Memento and is probably better than his unique thriller with Guy Pearce in 2000.
