Review of Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) by Greg B — 08 Jun 2015
"Insidious: Chapter 3" is the prequel to the first Insidious movie but bears the moniker of a sequel. In the film, a young girl whose mother recently passed with cancer contacts a clairvoyant to perform a séance to contact her mother.
However, in the process of contacting her mother, she reaches out to a more malevolent spirit pent on harvesting her spiritual energy and consuming her soul. It also wants to make her a permanent denizen of The Further, a void-like limbo where meandering spirits that haven't crossed over seek refuge.
I thought this film was a slight improvement over Insidious: Part 2, but only slightly. "Chapter 3" is hardly scary or terrifying at all. There are several decent jump scares, but that doesn't really make the film special.
The demon/spirit in the movie is not all that scary to begin with, and I frankly think the spirit is shown too early. Blumhouse should have eased into showing the spirit rather than letting the cat out of the box in one fell swoop.
The acting is pedestrian, which is not a surprise given the unknowns in the movie. It really is time for Insidious to die. After the first film, the series has imploded on itself entirely, and I don't think I could sit through another mediocre, cheesy, redundant sequel.
I thought this film had a decent storyline, but the acting and special effects could have been more realistic. I was really not all that scared by this film; maybe startled in certain spots, but not scared.
Dear Mr. Blumhouse, please kill this trite saga ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C.
