Review of Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) by Torion O — 06 Aug 2015
I gotta say, the first part was pretty sweet. It did very well building the tension. That was where the movie was most solid: Building tension, and making the jump scares actually effective and meaningful instead of the bullcrap of throwing them in just because.
What also makes this movie good is that the plot is cohesive, it ties together with the other two films, and it makes sense for the world it is set in. Maybe the problem with horror movies nowadays is that they lack a story that makes sense.
Really, having that lets the viewer watch the film without getting held up at points thinking "Wait, that doesn't make sense", and then allows them to fully experience the scares that unfold.
I am aware that this is a generic movie with generic scares, but the difference is that this movie gets a lot right to make the scares more effective. The only points where I had slight apprehension were when most of the sound would drop out and then the loud/scary thing would happen.
It's cheap, but effective. I'd rate this higher if the movie took advantage of those audio drops for tension building rather than releasing all the tension with a scare.
