Review of Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) by Leon B — 16 Oct 2015
Review:
I'm not the best person to write a review on this movie because I don't really like movies in this genre but I will give it a go! Personally, I found this film quite boring and when something eventually happens, after waiting an hour, it really isn't that great. It's about a young girl called Quinn (Stefanie Scott), whose trying to contact her mum after losing her to cancer. She goes to a psychic, Elise (Lin Shaye), who has given up contacting the spirit world because she previously brought back a dangerous spirit who has threaten to kill her if she enters that world again. Quinn then ends up in a car accident so she's unable to leave her house because her legs are in a cast. Whilst lounging around at home, some weird episodes happen which are pretty unexplainable so her dad, Sean (Dermot Mulroney), takes matters into his own hands and he goes back to the psychic who decides to see Quinn at home. Sean's son also calls some amateur ghostbusters who are completely useless when it comes to the paranormal world but when they decide to team up with the experienced Elise, they join forces to bring Quinn back from the dark world. I fell asleep halfway through the film because nothing was happening. The acting was pretty poor and the whole scary factor really didn't work for me. I also found it predictable, right from the beginning and there wasn't much depth to the storyline. I did like the Elise character, whose been in the previous Insidious movies but we have all seen the Quinn character, many times before in movies in this genre. On the plus side, there is a sense of intensity through the film which makes you wonder what is really going on but I personally wasn't that interested. Disappointing!
Round-Up:
This franchise has definitely made a name for itself, judging by the box office takings but you do need to have a interest in the paranormal world to really enjoy it, which I haven't. It's the first major role for Stephenie Scott, who also starred in the series A.N.T. Farm and the movie No Strings Attached, but at 18 years old, she still has a long way to go before she becomes a household name. This is the first movie directed by Leigh Whannell but he wrote the previous Insidious movies along with Saw I, II and III, Dead Silence, Cooties and the Mule, so he's definitely not new to this genre. Personally, I would have used some of the $10million budget to get some decent actors because they would have made the whole situation seem more intense, which the film lacked in some scenes. Dermot wasn't bad as the father because he did show some emotion towards his daughter and I liked the ghostbuster with the mohican because he brought some humour to the project but the other characters were quite dull. Anyway, the movie is watchable but not my cup of tea. .
Budget: $10million.
Worldwide Gross: $110million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their drama/horror/thrillers and who are familiar with the previous movies in this franchise. 2/10.
