Review of Insidious (2011) by Irfaan J — 06 Sep 2013
Insidious is a decent haunted house film that feels very similar to Poltergeist, and for a time the Paranormal Activity movies, which is no surprise considering that the creator of those films, Oren Peli produced this.
It has some genuine scares, a creepy atmosphere and some unsettling imagery. There may even be a twist in the tale that you didn't see coming. Unfortunately it also suffers from bland, uninteresting characterisations and a plot that is largely predictable, at least from a certain point in the proceedings.
The climax also feels a little rushed, even though the film ends on a memorable note. Nevertheless, this film is a fair selection for a late night scare fest, one that relies on atmosphere rather than cheap gore or empty boo moments.
