Review of Inside Out (2015) by Max M — 10 Jul 2017
Not funny or emotional for me at all. The story was so forced. The main "conflict" began only because Sadness couldn't listen to Joy and just touched an oh-so-important core-memory for no reason. Sure, the movie's message is alright, that we have to embrace sadness sometimes, but the message leads no where because at the end of the movie, Joy is still in control of headquarters and Sadness is in the same spot she was at the beginning, just hopefully not as disobedient.
The only redeeming qualities to this film were the scenes with just the people interacting together and showing the emotions inside reacting to each other. These scenes weren't trying way too hard to cram a plot or conflict in there. They just played out in a very entertaining and often comedic way.
Maybe Inside Out didn't work as well as the short, purposeless, funny scenes because it is afraid to just stay where it is and take it's time establishing characters, and of course: emotions.
