Review of Inside Moves (1980) by Vincent H — 23 Feb 2009
John Savage is really at his best when he does comedy.... All right just kidding. Overall I didn't think the movie was that compelling but, and make that a big BUT, it succeeds in a way few movies do.
In some of the scenes between Rory and Louise, it really feels like these are two real people talking and the camera just happens to be there. I was especially touched by the scene at the bar when Rory reads to Louise the letter he wrote for Jerry. The movie is worth seeing for that one scene alone (and the opening scene of course).
The "only" three extras on the DVD might seem a little light but it's the good stuff. An interview of Todd Walton (who wrote the original novel) and Director Richard Donner. Short to the point and informative. A PDF version of the shooting script (Why can't everybody do that? Seriously) and finally a commentary track by Donner and Brian Helgeland.
It's also interesting to note that "Inside Moves" is the movie that Donner made after Superman. From the interview, it's pretty obvious that a was a deeply personal project and he did it because at that point in his career he could.
See it.
