Review of Inside Man (2006) by Frank C — 27 Dec 2013
With a stellar screenplay and strong vision, Inside Man presents a fine entry into the volume of heist films. Director Spike Lee is able to keep viewers in the dark just as long as our protagonist is, ratcheting up the tension as the hours go by.
Denzel Washington delivers yet another strong leading role, as the voice of reason in a crazy situation, while Jodie Foster and Clive Owen play their roles in the whole shebang quite well. The soft ending may not deliver the immediate satisfaction of a gotcha moment a la Ocean's Eleven or The Italian Job, but the intellect of the story itself eliminates the need for one.
This is not the joint you'd expect from Lee, but a welcome one nonetheless, and his choice of projects in the future will be scrutinized to see if he will continue down this more mainstream path.
