There are some positive things to say about this film, to be sure. It has great art direction and cinematography, good acting and music (but only if you're an old-style folk music fan), some well-crafted/authentic feeling dialogue... And so on the surface, most all of the elements of a great film are here...

Vintage tattered New York City street scenes and people are captured very believably. John Goodman is crazy good playing a completely over the top maniac. Oscar Isaac has a really nice singing voice...

Unfortunately, there are two VERY BIG problems: 1.) a story arc is practically nonexistent; and 2.) there really isn't a likable character anywhere in this story, the only exception being Timberlake's. Everyone else is one or another flavor of asshole. Hard to find someone to care about here.

And so the movie is a slow torture to watch. Or it's like watching a slow torture. Either way, it wasn't a good investment of our time, in our opinion. We wouldn't recommend it to anyone quite honestly.

Four thumbs down.
