Review of Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) by Nihal G — 17 Apr 2014
The soul-stirring music aside, Inside Llewyn Davis is probably one of the most important films Oscar Isaac will ever do in his career.
It documents the life of Llewyn Davis (Isaac), a struggling, out-of-work folk singer trying to make it big in the folk music scene of Greenwich Village. His partner's dead, he might have impregnated his ex-girlfriend (the acerbic and brilliant Carey Mulligan), who's now with his best friend (Justin Timberlake), and he gets stuck with a cat (owned by a kindly elder couple, the Gorfeins, who let him sleep on their couch). Talking about couches, that's how Llewyn Davis survives day-to-day - from couch to couch.
The Coen brothers are at it again, exploring the base of human emotion, and tug at your heart strings with a brilliant portrait of the sad, bleak life of Davis. Heck, this movie didn't need an Oscar - it already had one. :-).
