Review of Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) by Michael H — 07 Mar 2015
A melancholy tale of not quite making it. Llewyn Davis is a good musician who never finds an audience. His mildly self-destructive and self-sabotaging behavior combined with being good at what's already been done but never breaking through to something innovative, unusual, or attention-grabbing (and seemingly never wanting to break through - or even recognizing it as desirable) keep Llewyn trapped in a dreary existence, resentful of people who succeed without seeing why they succeed.
The look of the movie, with its cold color palette, reinforces the feeling of an unconnected, lonely, existence. Warm lighting only appears in other people's homes; always places where Llewyn doesn't belong.
And, yeah, the music's good. And there's some restrained humor.
