Review of Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) by Jerome K — 04 Mar 2016
I'm always apprehensive when I see something classified as a "black comedy". I don't mind bleak, but when it's done almost satirically, I rarely find it enjoyable. This latest Coen brothers' film is a black comedy in the sense that bad stuff happens to the main character with such frequency its almost funny.
I say "almost" because unlike other black comedies, I actually did find myself empathizing with the main character. He's not an inherently bad or malicious person. He's just someone who's had bad experiences and makes foolish choices.
I don't think this kind of story is for everyone, but if you enjoy watching a performer like Oscar Isaac, who is not only a great actor but a great musician as well, you'll find a engaging character piece worth your while in Inside Llewyn Davis.
