Review of Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) by David S — 26 Mar 2016
I'm a huge Cohen Brothers fan; I will see everything they do. But I also admit to not enjoying some of their films very much.
Intolerable Cruelty was a slightly above average comedy, The Lady Killers far below average.
Don't get me started on "A Serious Man" -- It was a slice of life movie that had little to recommend it. A lack luster film with low key performances by characters I felt no empathy for. Their collective problems bored me.
This brings me to "Inside Llewyn Davis" it's another slice of life movie that starts with a moment in time and then jumps back a couple of days to trace the steps of Llewyn leading up to the "climatic moment" that began the film.
The most redeeming thing about this film is it's star; Oscar Issacs -- he's as charismatic as they come. Other cast members shine -- Carey Mulligan and John Goodman in particular... But their characters ultimately go nowhere...
Llewyn's journey is anticlimactic. It sheds no little light and creates no empathy for Llewyn's situation. The film has moments but with less impact than many of the Coen's more important flicks.
I hope their next effort is more hit than miss.
