Review of Inside Deep Throat (2005) by Jasmine C — 05 Jul 2008
A fascinating documentary. Like most Americans with a base knowledge of pop culture history and a birthdate in the 80s, I had heard of Deep Throat, but I had no idea it was this big, nor did I know it had such a profound impact on our government and society (actually it was a reference to it in the 1976 King Kong that got me interested in this film). It's hard to believe that our society has changed so much in 35 years (and also so little... in my understanding, the culture war this film references is still going on.).
Very interesting and thought provoking... I can't believe that there was a time when porno films were giving Hollywood a run for its money. In retrospect, I suppose I would have preferred a deeper (pun not intended!) documentary on the decency wars / porn chic of the 1960-70's and its impact on American culture, sexual revolution, and feminism. But I can't ask for what I didn't expect. The film does its job.
