Review of Inside Deep Throat (2005) by Stella D — 10 Oct 2009

I suppose I need to see "Deep Throat" before I critique the content of this film... But from the clips I did see it looked like it's not my cup of tea. But this film is an interesting analytical exercise in the colliding forces that created "Deep Throat," and the resulting cultural/societal/sexual/political ramifications.

The film offered as many viewpoints as it could, but ultimately championed "Deep Throat" as a film about "the freedom to speak out against shame and hypocrisy." I think I could only agree with this as far as the right of the public to view such films, and the right of people to be involved in careers of a sexual nature.

But the content of the film...which is about a woman who has a clitoris in her throat? Not exactly politically radical stuff. I am uncomfortable with the way Linda Boreman was demonized for flip-flopping as far as her views with her involvement in the film/ porn.

I can see her inability to give herself sexual agency destroyed other people, but in a culture where women's sexuality and has been commodified and altered to acquiesce to male desire, I cannot help but feel some compassion for her fickleness.
