Review of Inserts (1975) by Matt K — 01 Apr 2010
When telling somebody about a film I watched the other night it amazes me just how often I have to use the phrase "it's not a porno, honest". It has become somewhat of an inadvertant catch-phrase and whilst "Inserts" is definitely not a porno, it certainly doesn't have any inhibitions about flashing the flesh. In fact the brief moments of clothedness are the ones that should be considered flashes. This is because "inserts" is a film about an impotent, alcoholic 1920's film director who has been tossed aside by Hollywood and is now shooting porn films in his house.
As you can imagine, this sort of film is always going to be fairly explicit in terms of language and nudity. Indeed, some of the very first lines of the movie are those of an exasperated audience member, watching the work of "The Boy Wonder" (our impotent auteur), screaming hysterically "where is the cum shot". The film doesn't just try to shock and is driven by witty dialogue between the five main characters as they try to finish off a particular film whilst dealing with an escalating amount of adversity.
The film is really quite funny, in a sadistic and extremely twisted way. Be warned, that it is not an easy watch and it is fairly verbose at times, but if you have the patience to sit through it then you'll have a fairly fun ride.
