Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Jack L — 09 Aug 2010
Trying to understand Inland Empire is like trying to put together a puzzle, when half the pieces are missing, and most of the other pieces are deformed. There are numerous different storylines, in various times and regions.
None of them are clearly defined as being "real", none of them are clearly defined as being "imaginary", and all of them smash into one another at random times with little warning.
It's not David Lynch's best work, but it's certainly the most intricate, and deserves respect for the challenge of untangling the web. The problem is, this film is simply too long. It's difficult to maintain focus on any film for 3 hours, let alone a film without a fully coherent storyline.
Worth watching for anyone who loves a film that challenges their mettle a bit, but certainly not for everyone.
