Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Thomas H — 29 Sep 2008
Inspired by the Lynch doco, I finally took the time (3 hours of it folks!) to watch Inland Empire. Shooting on DV has allowed Lynch a far greater level of freedom and some might say too much. But if Inland Empire is a giant experiment for the director then I rate it as a success.
It follows similar themes and motifs from Mullholland Drive (an actress lost in the fog of Hollywood, unsure where reality ends and nightmare begins) but it dives much deeper down the rabbit hole into the bizarres recesses of the subconscious.
While not as good as Mullholland, it is nevertheless a unique trip that will no doubt seduce lovers of Lynch's world... and further alienate those who don't get it. Funny, scary, sexy, disturbing.
.. all of this and more, all steered by an incredible performance by Laura Dern and some truly unsettling sound design from Lynch. Not to mention the creepiest rabbits since Donnie Darko. The "Director's Suite" edition has some excellent interviews on a bonus disc, well worth checking out for fans.
