Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Caroline B — 03 Jan 2012
I had the distinct pleasure of falling asleep after the initial storyline took its inevitable Lynchian "meta"-self-referential turn (about an hour in). Till then, the film was great absurd fun.
Then there was a lot of Laura Dern wandering in dark rooms, both literal and metaphorical. That's about where I drifted into my own dreams. After that, I occasionally opened my eyes and realized that I didn't need any more weirdness for weirdness' sake: I got the tone, I got the message, I appreciated the performances.
I recommend turning off the film after you get to the same place or give in to falling asleep and finishing the narrative yourself. Viewing the next two hours will not help you to understand any more than this.
..unless you're on psychedelics or something.
