Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Ollie W — 24 Feb 2012
It's a tough watch at nearly three incredibly intense hours and it's celebratory incoherence will leave most viewers confused and frustrated, however, if considered as an Art piece, an abstract train of exploratory thought, as I believe all of Lynch's work should be, rather than a straight-up movie, the results will be far richer. Personally, I found the film difficult, problematic, frustrating, hilarious, troublesome and frightening, and yet I loved the fact that this sprawling, mad-cap 'thing' (to quote Mr. Lynch) could provoke such emotions and responses, after all, Lynch's work is work is always concerned with individual response and experience rather than banal entertainment and escapism. This is surrealist Art cinema at it's most provocative and challenging and I love it.
This is Lynch's most complete, original, untampered with work since Eraserhead.
