Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Graham J — 28 Feb 2012
It's an endurance test to say the least. 'INLAND EMPIRE' is a self-reflexive beast of a film about the madness of movie-making as a metaphysical hyperbolic nightmare. While I admire it's ambitions, (and I'm going to probably be on my own on this one) it unfortunately disappears into an abyss of frustrating, unnecessarily long self-indulgence and excess, where the only thing that is multi-layered and compelling is Laura Dern's performance.
There's a good movie somewhere inside this mess, and it does try to get out, but it's too over-loaded with jarring and obscure takes, most of which, should have been left on the cutting room floor.
Oh well, at least it's not as terrible as Lynch's 'Wild At Heart'.
