Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Emerson B — 12 Aug 2013
David Lynch is a one man show. His obsessive nature has led him to create great works of art if it may be to the disliking of the establishment studios. Little do we know that Lynch has gotten the last laugh after everyone adopted his serialized drama format created by Twin Peaks and now with Inland Empire, he's taken independence to a whole new level. Lynch directs, shoots, writes, produces, and finances this psychological thriller about a woman in trouble played but Laura Dern who in my opinion was totally cheated out of an Oscar for best actress.
The whole fabric of reality is subject to play as the film oscillates between reality, dream states, film sets, hallucinations, stories within stories, and memories. This is quite an experience and isn't afraid to deal with ambiguity and tough question as everyone takes away a different interpretation. This film also serves a slap in the face to formula stories and large hollywood productions and in the process examines the nature of storytelling. If there was ever a time to consider movie watching an experience, this would take the cake.
