Review of Inland Empire (2006) by Chase C — 12 Apr 2010
An actress loses herself in the script of the movie being filmed, and then she loses herself in inside of film entirely. At least that's my best guess as to what happens in Lynch's dreamworld. What makes this less effective than some of Lynch's other hallucinatory efforts is an inconsistency both in connective tissue between the disparate plot strands and in creating an atmosphere that sustains interest.
In bits and pieces Lynch does this, but only about half the time. Even with Dern giving it her all, there's too much that's dully unexplained (it's the adjective that matters there).
