Review of Inkheart (2008) by Amanda C — 17 Jan 2010
Not bad, better than I expected. Inkheart is the sort of story I love, walking a precarious line along the border between fantasy and reality. Paul Bettany does a good job as the conflicted fire-eater Dustfinger. Andy Serkis and Helen Mirren chew the scenery entertainingly. Inkheart is a fun & entertaining family film.
Mortimer "Mo" Folchart (Brendan Fraser) keeps travelling with his daughter Megan (Eliza Hope Bennett), trading in antique books, but secretly searching for a copy of the scarce novel Inkheart. This is because he is a Silvertongue - someone who, by reading aloud, can bring the content of a novel to life: specifically, this brings characters from a book into the real world. Unfortunately each character who comes into the real world must be replaced by a real person going into the book, and Megan's mother Resa disappeared when Mo was reading Inkheart to Megan when she was a child. Mo hopes to read Resa back into the real world. However, the Inkheart characters in the real world have their own plans. And it turns out that Megan is a Silvertongue too.
