This movie isn't bad as a standalone, without having read the book. It's entertaining, and the effects are decent, and the plot is solid- IF you haven't read the book. Unfortunately, I've read all three books and found myself mentally arguing with the screen writers throughout the entire film because they strayed from the book so much.
Stick to the books- they're much better overall.
