Review of Initial D (2005) by Peter Y — 06 Oct 2007
This was actually quite good.
It could've all gone so wrong, especially with the existing F&F films that I think are truely awful.
It's a good thing that the original that this was based on wasn't over the top flash no trousers thing. Of course it's all a bit silly and oh so boy-ish in it's subject (i mean.... cars, race, brum brum) but somehow, it still ends up being quite universal in it's appeal.
The cast and crew are all obviously a friends get together again (lets not even bother playing the spot the connection...) and it's that same high production value team that makes this as good as it is. We're it another lot or heaven forbid, an American studio doing this, it could've been so much worse.
Overall, it is much more restrained than you realise (watch other HK or driving/racing film) and while it does dispense with a lot of the actual plot and story, it does this to make a decent and watchable film and it leaves just enough to retain the flavour.
One thing though, I couldn't really stand the comedy sidekick... Never could.
