Review of Inherit the Wind (1960) by Aaron S — 24 Oct 2009
Based on the infamous Scopes-Monkey trial, this 1960 film is one of the most powerful courtroom dramas ever made.
The 3-time Academy Award winner, Spencer Tracy, adds a massive amount of respect and subtle American heroism through his performance as the Clarence Darrow-influenced role of the defense attorney. 2-time Oscar winner March commands several scenes himself as the anti-evolution fundamentalist prosecutor, based on former Presidential Candidate William Jennings Bryan.
Gene Kelly plays the lead supporting role as a cocky, headline seeking reporter sitting in at the defense table for the "exclusive" in the trial. Tracy's cross of March may very well be one of the greatest examples of truly brilliant acting ever seen in film. Both leave no question as to why "legendary" precedes their names.
