Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Davey M — 14 Jan 2015
The Brother's Coen created the Stoner Noir genre with The Big Lebowski but the surrealist ante has been upped. Paul Thomas Anderson and Thomas Pynchon have given us a new genre of film: Hippie Noir.
Inherent Vice is presented through the glassy eyes and foggy brain of Joaquin Phoenix's Doc Sportello. The fog is acted so expertly that I felt a little cloudy myself after leaving the theater. PTA's genius is most apparent in the film's stony narration by Doc's friend Sortrilege (Joanna Newsom) who gives us a slew of eminently quotable and immediate cult clasic lines for the taking.
The period is executed so well my dad was having a slew of flashbacks of his own (some even of the non-acid variety). By far my favorite PTA movie.
