Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Ryan K — 15 Jan 2015
This film is a work of art, just like a Thomas Pynchon novel, and just like a Pynchon novel, it is extremely challenging. Not an easy watch. If you're tired, forget about it. I can totally understand why the majority of viewers might not be able to get into this film, but, it has a lot to offer.
I'd suggest watching it, then reading some essays on it, then watching it again. Comparisons to The Big Lebowski (among others) can definitely be made, but this film is even more complex, and often mind-boggling (again, it's based on a Thomas Pynchon novel), and not quite as easily likeable.
That being said, there's much to enjoy and appreciate in this film, it just takes a little more patience. So, don't be a patchouli fart - give this film some attention.
